Kongsberg Geospatial Announces Deployment of New Air Traffic Control Training System to USS Carl Vinson
Ottawa, CA: Kongsberg Geospatial, an Ottawa-based developer of real-time, mission critical, geospatial and mapping software,announced today that their Air Traffic Control (ATC) simulation platform has been successfully deployed on the USS Carl Vinson, CVN-70.
"Once this rolls out to the rest of the fleet, it will increase the amount of training, experience, and flexibility available to each of the Navy's carrier air traffic control teams."

The simulation software allows air traffic controllers to train on real Carrier Air Traffic Control Center (CATCC) flight operations scenarios without the necessity of actual flight operations, and without having to leave the ship to attend shore-based training schools. Kongsberg Geospatial worked closely with NAVAIR 4.11.7 and subject matter experts during system development and testing to ensure the trainer precisely meets all real world conditions.
As reported in the Navy.mil, story CATCC Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO) Chief Air Traffic Controller Keith Thompson explained how the new simulator would provide embarked air traffic controllers a mission-ready edge over others in the fleet: "Normally we don't have any flight operations we can simulate while we're in port", explained Thompson. "Now that we have this simulator, we can come here and simulate flight operations any given day."
The CATCC ATC Simulator software is based on the I-SIM air traffic simulation platform developed by Kongsberg Geospatial. The platform is currently in use in numerous CTI-accredited training centers throughout the United States, and is used by the FAA for advanced human factor interface design and for air space modelling around major airports as part of the FAA Metroplex program. The platform has been adapted to meet U.S. Navy specifications and includes new features specifically required for simulating CATCC flight operations.

Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO) Chief Air Traffic Controller Keith Thompson is confident that the new system will impact Air Traffic Control training operations in a big way: "This is one of the most impactful improvements in carrier air traffic control in a long time," said Thompson. "Once this rolls out to the rest of the fleet, it will increase the amount of training, experience, and flexibility available to each of the Navy's carrier air traffic control teams."
The Navy will be deploying the embedded trainer to the rest of the fleet over the next few years.
